100 Books Last Year!

on January 2nd, 2011 by Shannon

At the beginning of 2010, I made a promise to myself – a resolution, if you will – to keep track of all the books I read. I thought it would be fun to have a number (100!) as well as a handy list, should anyone ask “Say, Shannon, what were the 10 best books you read in 2010?” As people are wont to do. (And that marks the first time I’ve ever used the word wont in a sentence.)

Shelfari made this easy. If you’ve never been, check it out. But first, check out my top picks:

10. The Poisoner’s Handbook by Deborah Blum

9.  The Spellmans Strike Back by Lisa Lutz

8. True Confections by Katharine Weber

7. A Broom of One’s Own by Nancy Peacock

6. The White Giraffe by Lauren St. John

5. This is Where I Leave You by Jonathan Tropper

4. Stitches by David Small

3. Wit’s End by Karen Joy Fowler

2. The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place by Maryrose Wood

1. eating heaven by Jennie Shortridge

And there you have it. These are the books I graced with a full 5 stars this year.  Which means ten percent of my total reads were winners. Lest you think I am a harsh critic, I’ll say that the vast majority of books fall into the 3-star category – I liked it. 15 received a two-star rating – I didn’t like it-  and only a single title got the dreaded one-star rating – I hated it. I won’t say which title, but I will say that I only rate a book I finish, and for reasons I cannot fathom, I was determined to finish that one. And have ever since regretted it.

In general, with a TBR stack taller than me, if I don’t like a book, I put it down. And then it does not get counted in my final tally.

In the interest of total honesty, I’ll say that I only read 99 books by other writers this year. I was feeling bummed about not meeting my goal, until just after midnight on New Year’s Eve, when my husband pointed out that I’d read my own novel over at least two full times during edits, and that should count for something.

So The Totally True Tales of Tansy Berry, Tooth Ferry becomes novel 100. I’ll keep the rating to myself.
