My Amazon Breakthrough Novel Entry

on April 14th, 2009 by Shannon

As some of you may know, Amazon.com, in conjunction with the Penguin Group is offering a $25,000 book contract to the lucky winner of their Breakthrough Novel contest. I am currently one of 500 quarter-finalists, with my entry of “Bedeviled Glass.” Here is the pitch that landed me my spot:

Since its discovery, glass has been thought to contain mystical powers. This is why stained glass windows are so prevalent in places of worship – their beauty and light the very symbol of goodness. But what if such a window were created for evil purposes?
Such is the case in Bedeviled Glass, a contemporary gothic mystery in the style of best-selling authors Diane Setterfield and John Harwood.
When architectural preservationist Anne Bannister finds a disturbing connection between a stained-glass ceiling, an ancient ritual, and the mysterious disappearance of a young girl, her perceptions of good and evil are shattered.
There are many things that Anne feels passionately about: preserving the work of artists past, getting as far away from her married ex-lover as possible, excellent Kung Pao Chicken. Spirituality is nowhere on the list. She prides herself on being a rational person. Her work in stained glass restoration requires a steady hand and absolute focus. She has neither the time nor the inclination for the psychic nonsense her best friend, Cherise, finds so intriguing. Unfortunately, her latest project is about to put her rigid belief system to the test.
When they move into the old Victorian house on Lake Michigan, things take a disturbing turn. Anne’s research into the history of the atrium ceiling uncovers a dark secret, one that someone is desperate to keep hidden. And normally bubbly Cherise is being overshadowed by a sinister presence.
Soon, it is not just Anne’s faith at stake, but her best friend’s life. In order to save Cherise, she’ll have to face her demons and accept that some things, though incomprehensible, still exist. Like love. And evil.
My publishing credits include prize-winning stories in Toasted Cheese Literary Journal and Writer’s Weekly, as well as stories in The Chick Lit Review and MysteryAuthors.com.

What do you think? Is this a book you’d like to read? Here’s hoping Penguin thinks so, because the 100 semi-finalists will be announced tomorrow! In the meantime, you can read my entry and my reviews here:
